DIVERSITY Vs DISABILITY
Disability is part of human diversity. One in five people in Australia, almost 4 million people, have a disability and this proportion is increasing with an ageing population. People with disability purchase consumer goods, have jobs, go on holidays, access information and contribute to society in the same way that people without disability do. The only difference is that often people with disability come up against significant barriers while trying to do the things that many of us take for granted.
RESPONSIBILITY OF ORGANISATION
Accommodating a worker means providing assistance or making changes in the job or workplace that will enable the worker to do the job. For example, an employer might lower the height of a desktop to accommodate a worker in a wheelchair; or provide a quiet, distraction-free workspace for a worker with attention deficit disorder.
TYPES OF DISABILITY:
- Physical disability : The most common type of disability, followed by intellectual and sensory disability. Physical disability generally relates to disorders of the musculoskeletal, circulatory, respiratory and nervous systems.
- Sensory disability : It involves impairments in hearing and vision.
- Neurological and cognitive disability : It includes acquired disability such as multiple sclerosis or traumatic brain injury.
- Intellectual disability : It includes intellectual and developmental disability which relate to difficulties with thought processes, learning, communicating, remembering information and using it appropriately, making judgments and problem solving.
ANTI DISCRIMINATION ACTS
2. Disability Services Act 1986This Act is a detailed guide to the funding and provision of Australian Government support services for people with disability. Under this Act, the Australian Government is largely responsible for employment services. The states and territories focus on accommodation and other support services.
